CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2012

Competition Info:

The 2012 Africa Cup of Nations ("AFCON") will be the 28th edition of the championship of Africa which is organized and executed by the Confederation of African Football ("CAF"). The tournament will be played between the 21st January 2012 and the 12th February 2012.

The competition will be co-hosted by two countries: Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. The matches will be played in the following venue cities.

Venues

1. Libreville (Stade d'Angondjé)

The Stade d'Angondjé is a stadium in Angondjé, a suburb of Libreville in Gabon. It is referred to as Stade de l'Amitié. 

The stadium build was expected to take 20 months and will be funded by the Gabonaise and Chinese governments.It is one of four stadiums to be used for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and is expected to host the competition final. The inaugural football match played here was Gabon facing off against Brazil. Brazil won that match 2-0. The symbolic laying of the foundation stone was made by the Gabonese Sports Minister Rene Ndemezo’Obiang and the Chinese Vice Minister Fu Ziying in April 2010. This stadium was constructed by China, and built on a 30 hectare area by the Chinese company Shanghai Construction. The work was entirely funded by China while Gabon developed the site, including bringing water and electricity, and building access roads.

Libreville is the capital of Gabon and characterized by modern architecture and many places of modern culture. In Libreville, French is becoming the native language.

2. Franceville (Stade de Franceville)

Built in 2005, the stage of Fanceville is among the largest football stadiums in Gabon.. In a capacity of 10,000 spectators, Gabon has planned a series of works to enable him to receive for the African Cup of Nations 2012 to 35 000 people. Usually, the stadium "Renovation" - the other name of the stadium Franceville - is the venue of home matches of FC Franceville. During the CAN 2012, however, the stage of Franceville will be the showplace for three group stage matches and a quarterfinal.

Franceville is one of the biggest towns in Gabon and probably the most modern city there. Its infrastructure allows Franceville being an economic and social centre in the southeast of Gabon. The city is also known for its waterfalls.

3. Bata (Estádio de Bata)

Stade de Bata is a multi-use stadium in Bata, Equatorial Guinea. The stadium has a capacity of 22,000 people and is currently being expanded to 40,000 as one of the host stadiums for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations including the opening ceremony and semi-final. The stadium, was completed in 2007. It was a venue for the 2008 Women's African Football Championship. The stadium is located a few kilometers from the coast and adjacent to a sport complex currently under construction which features an indoor sports hall, covered swimming pool, hotel and most main sporting codes.

Bata itself is the largest city in Equatorial Guinea and is famous for its function as one of the biggest harbours on Africa's westcoast. Along with its airport, it is an economic centre in Equatorial Guinea.

4. Malabo (Estádio de Malabo)

Nuevo Estádio de Malabo is a multi-purpose stadium in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium holds 15,250 and opened in 2007. It is currently the home ground of the Equatorial Guinea national football team. It is one of the host stadiums for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. It hosted the final of the Women's African Nations Football cup in 2008.

Malabo is the capital of Equatorial Guinea and is located at the northern coast of Boiko island. It is however not the biggest city of the country. Malabo was and is often called as the "Auschwitz of Africa" as many people died during dictatorships. Equatorial Guinea is one of the countries where Spanish is the main language apart from Latin America and Spain itself.
