Mike Mullarkey has equalized the 8-match-record in UCL

When having been appointed to accompany Howard Webb in UEFA Champions League's Semifinal First leg between Bayern München and Real Madrid, the English top assistant referee Mike Mullarkey has taken note of his 8th inset in this season's roster.
It was furthermore his 25th appointment ever in the world's most popular and prestigious club competition.

Overview his 2011/12 UCL matches:
  • FC Barcelona - AC Milan (Atkinson)
  • Lille - Internazionale (Webb)
  • Ajax - Dinamo Zagreb (Atkinson)
  • Trabzonspor - Internazionale (Atkinson)
  • Dinamo Zagreb - Olympique Lyon (Clattenburg)
  • SL Benfica - Zenit St.Petersburg (Webb)
  • Bayern München - FC Basel (Clattenburg)
  • Bayern München - Real Madrid (Webb)

The 41-year old professional assistant referee has hence equalized the heretofore effective record in this millennium established by the German Carsten Kadach (2006/07) and two Norwegians, Ole Borgan and Steinar Holvik (2002/03).

These assistant referees are leading the list of the highest amount of matches during the last seasons (2000-now):

In addition to this, Mike Mullarkey may exhibit an extra-ordinary high amount of tournament experience along with Webb. He also participated in UEFA EURO 2008, where he (wrongly) did not raise his flag for offside which led to a goal. For this reason, the English team was sent home after the group stage. After his participation in the FIFA Confederations Cup, in 2010, he accompanied Webb also in the 2010 UEFA Champions League Final in Madrid and later, of course, the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final.
Besides, Mullarkey has been appointed 114 times within the last 4 Premier League seasons.
He probably joins or even leads the pool of the best assistant referees in Europe.
