Fırat Aydınus of Turkey, Ivan Bebek from Croatia, Portugal's Olegário Benquerença and Pavel Královec of Czech Republic have been assigned to take charge of Thursday's UEFA Europa League quarterfinals second legs.
For professional Turkish referee Fırat Aydınus, it is the peak of a great season having started with the Champions League match between Bayern München and Valencia CF and resulting in handling a Champions League K.O. stage match as Elite Development referee (Juventus - Celtic).
As another sign of his comeback to the pool of the most promising European future referee, Croatian Ivan Bebek will get another chance to convince in Newcastle - Benfica, having already performed well in the sonorous Internazionale - Tottenham clash.
With Pavel Královec, UEFA has rewarded the next rising star of their refereeing: after four remarkable Champions League matches in this season, among others the Round of 16 match between Bayern München and Arsenal FC, he will have the honour to oversee the duel between Lazio and Fenerbahçe. He will be under a certain pressure, as Lazio heavily complaint about the referee performances in their matches, e.g. William Collum's decisions in Istanbul last week.
Last but not least, the most striking and surprising appointment of the entire matchday: Portugal's Olegário Benquerença will return to the big stage after his long absence due to injury after which he merely handled two UEFA club competition matches. It will be his second international match in 2013 though.
In a sum, UEFA's appointments fully make sense and are deserved rewards for the appointed officials, while Benquerença's presence stays a small surprise.
