UEFA Referee Committee have decided to assign Slovenian referee Matej Jug for Tuesday's Under-21 European Championship final between Italy and holders Spain, being the third match for the aspiring 1980 born match official at this tournament.

In the group stage campaign, Jug already took charge of two ties involving the Russian side when they were defeated by the Netherlands (0:1) and by Germany (1:2). He showed very convincing performances in both matches. Specially the matchday 3 duel between those Group A teams who had already been determined to leave the tournament was tough to control: Jug correctly sent off a Russian player for serious foul play, awarded a correct penalty kick to the Germans and showed, apart from that, a good piece of refereeing. The only point of criticism that was reported by our blog observer was a missing sending-off against a Russian player for serious foul play in the very early stages of the game (17th minute).
Jug is currently a First Group referee, but after this tournament, a promotion to Elite Development does not only seem to be likely, but also deserved. At last year's UEFA European Championship 2012, he assisted Elite official Damir Skomina in three matches as additional assistant referee.
In this final, he will be assisted by Austrian Roland Brandner and Hungarian Vencel Tóth. Halis Özkahya of Turkey and Slovakian Ivan Kružliak will function as additional assistant referees. Ivan Bebek of Croatia, whom many people considered as the most probable final official, will be involved as fourth official.
